Professional Certificate in Group Work
Jointly developed with the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) and Ministry of Health (MOH), ‘Professional Certificate in Group Work’ is a course that equips social workers with foundation-level practice competencies in group work theories, plus processes and facilitation techniques in a group work setting. Learners will be equipped with the necessary group formation, facilitation and evaluation skills to help them plan effective group interventions.
Social workers can embark on this course as part of a competency-based training roadmap to deepen their skills and knowledge and plan their career progression pathway based on competencies and job roles.
Social workers who possess at least a Bachelors degree, or Graduate Diploma in Social Work from a recognised university.
Learners are required to undergo summative assessments in the form of role play and written assessments. All learners are required to attend an oral interview at the end of each module.
Module 1: Apply Group Work Theories and Processes
This module introduces learners to the different types of groups, and the underlying theories and processes of group work to enable them to work effectively with clients in a group work setting. The module also aims to equip learners with the necessary group formation skills to help them plan effective group work interventions that are useful in addressing clients’ needs through purposeful group experiences. Through this module, learners will be able to:
- Apply group work theories when planning for group work sessions.
- Relate to group work processes when working with clients in a group work setting.
- Use group formation skills in forming groups.
Module 2: Facilitate Group Work Sessions
This module focuses on providing learners with the necessary facilitation skills to conduct group work sessions. Learners will also be equipped with the relevant techniques to improve group dynamics and enhance its members’ engagement in the group work sessions. The module will also cover ways to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of a group work programme. Through this module, learners will be able to:
- Apply facilitation skills to conduct group work sessions.
- Apply techniques to improve group dynamics.
- Propose a group work programme evaluation plan.
This course qualifies for CPE credits, with the renewal of accreditation at one credit per one training hour.
